Bob Henriquez gets another term as Hillsborough Property Appraiser

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Hillsborough County voters have given Property Appraiser Bob Henriquez another four years in office. Henriquez held a comfortable 57-43 percent lead with 293 of 340 precincts reporting over Todd Jones, who was making his first attempt at public office. “I’m very pleased and honored to have the opportunity to serve another four years,” Henriquez said. “We ran our campaign based on the results we have been able to achieve over the previous four years.” Jones tried to paint Henriquez as…

Joe Henderson: Bob Henriquez, Todd Jones spar over issues in Hillsborough property appraiser race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Since Bob Henriquez took over as Hillsborough County’s property appraiser four years ago, he has taken several steps to modernize the office. There are nine fewer employees than the office had before Henriquez arrived, and the department’s budget is lower. Most important, though — Henriquez hasn’t had a batch of negative headlines. That’s no small matter. The last time an incumbent property appraiser in the county failed at re-election was 1988, when Bud Parker lost to Ron Alderman. Both Alderman and…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Michelle Obama brought her newly awakened star power to the Hillary Clinton campaign Thursday, giving a speech with the Democratic nominee yesterday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she said the Donald Trump campaign modus operandi in the final 10 days of the election was to discourage them from going to the polls. “Here’s where I want to get real. If Hillary doesn’t win this election, that will be on us,” she said to one of the biggest crowds a Clinton campaign…

Commission on Ethics dismisses complaint made against Hillsborough Property Appraiser candidate Todd Jones

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Florida Commission on Ethics has dismissed a complaint filed last month against Republican property appraiser candidate Todd Jones. Former Hillsborough County Democratic chair Elizabeth Belcher made two assertions in her complaint. One was that Jones had left blank the spaces for listing assets and describing business affiliations in his financial disclosure form that he originally completed in June. She alleged that Jones had failed to accurate disclose assets on his “CE Form 6” financial disclosure for 2015. Jones says he received bad legal…

Hillsborough County Republicans to gather in South Tampa to watch final night of RNC

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

While it’s been well noted that there are many Republicans not in Cleveland this week for the RNC (hello, David Jolly), there are many others in the Tampa Bay area who might have wanted to attend, but aren’t delegates or don’t want to spend the money that it requires to travel to the Buckeye State. A number of these Republicans will gather Thursday night in Tampa at a “Unifying for America: Trump for President” convention watching party at 81 Bay Brewing…

Bob Henriquez wants Todd Jones to renounce Joe Walsh endorsement in Hillsborough Property appraiser race

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Inexplicably, controversial conservative talk-show host and former Illinois GOP Congressman Joe Walsh has become an issue in the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser’s race. Walsh lit up a firestorm on social media Thursday night when he tweeted after five Dallas police officers were killed during a Black Lives Matter protest that, “This is now war. Watch out Obama. Watch out black lives matter punks. Real America is coming after you” (the tweet has since been deleted). Walsh also sent out subsequent tweets, once of…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.24.16 — Jeb Bush’s endorsement of Ted Cruz means … what?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

On why Americans hate politics, example #462. Jeb Bush came out and endorsed Ted Cruz on Wednesday. As he put it yesterday, “For the sake of our party and country, we must overcome the divisiveness and vulgarity Donald Trump has brought into the political arena, or we will certainly lose our chance to defeat the Democratic nominee, most likely Hillary Clinton, this fall.” It’s curious why the former Florida Governor only now is backing Cruz though. Two weeks ago, Bush met up…
