Several GOP presidential candidates support ending birthright citizenship; what about Florida GOP Senate candidates?

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The issue of denying citizenship for children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants has always been considered somewhat of a fringe idea, even among some of the biggest hawks fighting illegal immigration. The issue has come to the forefront this week after GOP presidential contender Donald Trump unveiled his white paper on immigration on Sunday, which included eliminating automatic birthright citizenship. On the campaign trail on Monday,  Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker immediately signaled his support for the plan (before backing off).…

David Jolly strikes back at conservative critics

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Though there is no clear early favorite in the Republican race for U.S. Senate next year in Florida, Pinellas County U.S. Rep. David Jolly has broken through enough to top some recent polls. Being based in the Tampa Bay area is also a plus going into next year’s primary, as it’s home to roughly a quarter of the state’s GOP voting bloc. And while his record is solidly conservative, he’s certainly no Tea Partier, and wouldn’t have been elected in last year’s special…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.31.15 — Whose lives matter?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Greetings from the Extended Stay America motel in Fort Lauderdale, just a few blocks from the Fort Lauderdale/Broward CountyConvention Center. That’s where three of the Democrats running for president: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley — will be addressing the thousands gathered at the National Urban League’s annual meeting. The event comes a couple of weeks after Sanders and O’Malley were bum-rushed by some #BlackLivesMatter activists at the NetRoots Nation conference in Phoenix, causing some tension between the establishment…

For the first time this year, Donald Trump tops a state poll of GOP presidential candidates in Florida. Alan Grayson & Patrick Murphy in a virtual tie in new Dem Senate poll

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The Democratic U.S. Senate race in Florida is a statistical tie, some 13 months before the primary election, according to a new poll. Orlando U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson gets 33 percent and Jupiter U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy 32 percent in the Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey published this morning in POLITICO by reporter Marc Caputo. That’s good news for Grayson, whose stock has risen by 19 percentage points since the two candidates were polled by Mason-Dixon in April. Murphy’s numbers were up also, from 22 to 32…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.21.15 — Bill McCollum isn’t seriously thinking of running for Senate. Is he?

in Top Headlines by

I was going to opine on John Kasich entering the GOP presidential contest this morning, but let’s get to that tomorrow. Instead, let’s talk about the Florida U.S. Senate race, now that David Jolly is officially in the race, along with U.S. Ron DeSantis, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and retired CIA contractor Todd Wilcox. Lately the conventional wisdom from at least two Florida political reporters/analysts is that with such a relatively unknown field, former Central Florida U.S. Rep. Bill McCollum could be viable if…

David Jolly reacts to conservative criticism of his record

in 2017/Top Headlines by

A close observation of Pinellas County Congressman David Jolly‘s record in the House indicates that despite the occasional pragmatic vote (he does represent a moderate district in Congress after all), nobody would accuse him of being a liberal. Well, almost no one. Today the Club for Growth, an economic conservative political group, came out with a statement blasting the newest entrant into the GOP Senate 2016 race, with their president, David McIntosh calling Jolly, “a big-spending liberal and former lobbyist who…
