PSTA wants to tap property tax, fare box revenue to balance budget

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority is taking steps to ensure its continued solvency. A budget proposal being presented to the PSTA board next week shows financial stability for the agency over the next four years. “It shows strong financial management and the health of PSTA to go from the adopted current budget’s plan relying on more than $2 million in reserves to now predicting a surplus of nearly half a million dollars,” said PSTA Executive Committee member Darden Rice. Among…

State won’t fund PSTA’s $1 million BRT study

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A $1 million ask by the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority will not be funded in the state’s 2015 budget. The Legislature agreed on an $80 billion budget late Monday night, but it did not include proposed funding for a Bus Rapid Transit study for a Central Avenue route connecting downtown St. Pete and the beaches. “PSTA representatives heard very positive feedback and 100 percent support from our Pinellas delegation, and our agency will keep working to find funding for BRT in…

PSTA staffers to dress up like a gas pump and get dunked to support transit

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Tuesday is National Dump the Pump Day. Traditionally that means local transit agencies would encourage residents to use public transit instead of their cars for the day. That’s what the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority is doing. Sort of. PSTA is teaming up with Ferg’s to celebrate the day with a “Dunk the Pump” event at Ferg’s sports bar across from Tropicana Field. PSTA officials and staff members will dress up like a gas pump, sit in a dunk tank and…

PSTA explores all-electric bus option

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

An American company that builds all-electric transit buses rolled through Pinellas County Wednesday to court the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority. PSTA employees hopped aboard Proterra’s all-electric 40-foot bus called Catalyst. The bus doesn’t look all that different than others, but it sounds a whole lot quieter and doesn’t require a drop of diesel fuel. It runs solely on electricity. Nearly a third of PSTA’s fleet currently runs diesel-hybrid buses. Those are the models the agency has been purchasing almost exclusively…

PSTA sets fifth straight monthly ridership record

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has set its fifth monthly record in a row with more than 1.2 million rides in the month of April. PSTA users boarded buses and other transit services 1,280,595 times in the month of April. That represents a 3.8 percent increase over the same month last year, equating to nearly 50,000 more rides than the previous April. PSTA’s previous all-time ridership was 1.2 million. The agency has provided more than a million rides each month…

(Not) shocking news — PSTA won’t be putting up another referendum in 2016

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Stop the presses! The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority won’t be taking another stab at a transit referendum in 2016. Well, you don’t say! Of course they aren’t going to try that again so soon. PSTA board members and Greenlight Pinellas backers are still licking their wounds from a crippling, embarrassing defeat just four months ago. Who the H-E double hockey sticks would want to go down that road again before stopping to catch a breath and, I don’t know, avoid…

PSTA in small crowd of prestigious award winners

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Pinellas County’s public transportation agency is one of only three in the nation to receive the Transportation Security Administration’s Gold Standard award more than once. The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority also won the award last year. “It takes a lot of hard work to win this award and it’s reflective of the dedication of your agency,” said TSA Director of Surface Transportation Division Sonia Proctor during a PSTA board meeting Wednesday. PSTA was one of 137 agencies to apply for…
