FSU second half blitz dramatically changed the tone on social media

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Fourth-ranked Florida State was heading toward a once-in-a-generation defeat on Monday night. The eleventh-ranked Mississippi Rebels were laying a huge whuppin’ on FSU reminiscent of the 1988 season-opening debacle against Miami. The Seminoles were ranked as the pre-season number one that year and went to face the sixth-ranked Hurricanes in the Orange Bowl. After falling behind by 17 points at halftime, things got worse and Miami handed Florida State a humiliating 31-0 defeat. FSU trailed by 15 points at halftime…

Pinellas school board candidate: Being elected is “not a priority”

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Robert J. Beal, a first-time candidate, says his first priority is his daughter, who has medical issues, and not the election. “It’s not a priority to tell you the truth,” Beal said Wednesday. “I have a lot on my plate. … Nothing else matters except for my daughter.” But Beal said he’s not withdrawing from the District 1 at-large race for the Pinellas County School Board. He just doesn’t plan a vigorous campaign. “If I get elected, I’ll do the…

Sweet Meteor of Death campaign rolling on empty promises

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The Sweet Meteor of Death is not going to upstage this election season. That’s according to the NASA Near Earth Object Program that tracks roughly 15,000 asteroids, comets and gigantic pieces of space rock that pose any kind of threat to the Earth. That may be bad news for 13 percent of American registered voters, who told Public Policy Polling last month that given a choice of Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton or “A giant meteor hitting the Earth,” they’ll take the space rock. In what might…

Kathy Castor says she’s weary of having moments of silence in gun tragedies without any action

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tampa Bay area Rep. Kathy Castor says when she returns to Congress Monday night, there’s likely to be a moment of silence on behalf of the 49 people killed in an Orlando LGBT nightclub on Sunday morning. But she says the times call for something bigger than that. “I’m pretty tired of having moments of silence without action, and without a plan to prevent these kinds of tragedies from happening again,” Castor told reporters Monday morning at a news conference inside the…

Pam Bondi’s office can’t resolve Twitter public record question

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A list of everyone who has blocked, or been blocked by, an elected official on Twitter might be a public record, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi‘s office. Then again, maybe not. “The question presented … involves mixed questions of law and fact that this office cannot resolve,” said an informal Attorney General’s advisory opinion issued last week. The opinion was requested by Gainesville City Attorney Nicolle Shalley. She wanted to know “whether a list or record of accounts which have been blocked…

Inside the origins of Donald Trump’s high-octane Twitter account

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Peter Costanzo is the man who helped turn Donald Trump into @RealDonaldTrump. That, of course, is Trump’s Twitter account — a high-octane portal for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to pump out insults, political attacks and self-promotion to more than 8 million followers. But the billionaire’s foray into the world of social media began with a much simpler purpose, yet one that’s still distinctively Trump: making money. Costanzo crossed paths with Trump in 2009 when he was working as online…

Coming soon to Twitter: More room to tweet

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Twitter is making some big changes, at least in the context of 140 characters or fewer. The social media service said Tuesday that in coming months, photos, videos and other media won’t count toward Twitter’s 140-character limit. Now, for example, when a user posts a photo, it counts for about 24 characters. That means slightly more wordy tweets are on the way. The change, announced Tuesday, is yet another attempt by the San Francisco company to make its messaging service…
