Why are so many people trying to stand in the way of innovation?

in Peter/Statewide by

If all forms of innovation were stifled, this website wouldn’t exist (and yes, there are probably some folks who are thinking “if only …”). The latest target for these head-in-the-sand Luddites is ride-sharing, in the form of companies like Uber and Lyft. Ride-sharing is not just inevitable — it’s real, and it’s here to stay. Yet, like the buggy whip manufacturers who tried to convince themselves that automobiles were just a passing fancy, the taxicab industry is doing everything it can to deny the…

The company charged $1.80 per mile when it started in Tampa Bay in…

State Sen. Jeff Brandes says he knows where the future of transportation is heading, and it’s not towards a bus stop. “The future of transportation is people going from your house to your business and back,” said Brandes, alluding to ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft. “It’s isn’t […] walking to the bus stop, getting on the bus, taking the bus to the next bus stop, getting off and walking to your destination.” Brandes’ remarks came Wednesday night, during…

A rumor circulating Monday was that Cockream was resigning, but Kyle Parks, a spokesman for the agency, says that isn’t accurate. He says that Cockream has been speaking with Hillsborough PTC Chair Victor Crist about retiring “for months.” Cockream’s decision comes on the same day that FloridaPolitics.com reported that Cockream spent two days last week speaking to Palm Beach…

Hillsborough PTC Executive Director (and ride-sharing critic) says he met with Palm Beach County Commissioners as a “resource”

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In recent weeks, agents with the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission (PTC) have resumed citing Uber and Lyft drivers for being out of compliance with the agency’s regulations. And after the Florida Legislature failed once again to address insurance and background regulations regarding such ridesharing companies earlier this  year, the PTC conducted an initial workshop last month to begin creating a new regulatory framework that applies equally to both Uber and Lyft, as well as the existing taxicab industry. PTC executive director Kyle Cockream has…

Jeff Brandes say his next focus will be on reforming Florida prison system

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A mentally ill inmate who was in protective custody was found dead at the Columbia Correctional Institution on Tuesday, a day after a corrections officer was hospitalized in an attack. It’s yet another black mark on a prison system that many say is overcrowded and underfunded, though Department of Corrections insist those issued had nothing to do with the attack. The Florida Legislature opted not to give the Department of Corrections the 734 additional positions that the agency said were necessary to…
