Mitch Perry Report for 2.11.16 – Carly and Chris bid adieu to the circus

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina have suspended their presidential campaigns. This reporter had the chance to see the New Jersey governor (yes, that is the day job he’s pretty much blown off for months) a week ago in Keene, N.H. The fun part about that was how intimate it was: It was a small crowd (maybe too small, an indication of how he was going to perform on Tuesday), but other than a few opening remarks, the 90-minute event was all about him…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The executive director for the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission told Florida lawmakers on Wednesday he’s OK if they ban his agency from regulating ride-sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft. Kyle Cockream came before the House Economics Committee to speak in support of the bill, sponsored by Republican Dana Young from Tampa and Plant City’s Dan Raulerson. Young told the committee that it’s substantially similar to a bill proposed by Fort Walton Beach Republican Matt Gaetz that overwhelmingly passed the entire House…

Today on Context Florida: Public records, forfeitures, scam artists, Key West housing and risks & reward

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: They call us the Sunshine State, but Diane Roberts says Florida’s government prefers to operate in the shadows. Like vampire bats, cockroaches and mold spores. If you can’t see what the government is doing, you can’t fight it. That explains the 74 public records exemption bills before the Legislature this session. Yes, Robert says, there are 74 new attacks on your right to know what’s going on. There’s CS/HB 905, the Matt Gaetz Mug Shot Relief Act,…

Gut check: Legislative Session reaches midpoint

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

With the half-way mark of the 60-day 2016 Legislative Session on Wednesday, the theme so far is like a line from a Frankie Valli song: “… so close/And yet so far.” Take the 2016-17 state budget, the only bill lawmakers are required to pass each year. The House came in at $79.9 billion with the Senate proposing $80.9 billion. Sure, that’s only a billion dollars apart, but $1 billion is still a lot of money, even in Tallahassee. Lawmakers are set to…

Ride-sharing bill passes Senate committee while paving the way for impasse

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted favorably a measure that would regulate Transportation Network Companies like Uber and Lyft. The proposed bill requires $1 million in insurance coverage for ride-hailing drivers provided either by the individual or by the company. Currently, laws vary from location to location and often leave drivers carrying only private automobile coverage that would not apply while using their vehicle for hire. The provision is similar to a bill passed in the House, but omits several items…

Pro-business groups, lawmakers form ridesharing coalition

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Stare business and transportation leaders along with officials pushing comprehensive ride-hailing legislation launched the Floridians for Ridesharing Coalition Tuesday ahead of discussion slated for the Senate Judiciary committee. State Sen. Jeff Brandes and Rep. Matt Gaetz both back legislation in their respective chambers that would regulate the industry through rules on insurance requirements for drivers. Rules governing companies such as Uber and Lyft are ambiguous and leave drivers vulnerable to traffic tickets and being turned away from customers. Insurance experts…

Mitch Perry Report for 2.2.16 – Clinton 23 gets delegates, Sanders 21 in New Hampshire

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

We’re on to New Hampshire, but first … Ted Cruz deserves plaudits for grinding out a great victory for himself in Iowa last night, but can he win enough delegates to earn the nomination? I maintain that he can’t and won’t, which makes Marco Rubio‘s strong third-place victory the big story going into the next week. Let’s look at the incredibly close results in the Democratic Primary. First off, Hillary Clinton is being called “the apparent victor” by every media…
