Victor Crist fires back at Uber

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

After delivering what the Tampa Bay Times‘ Caitlin Johnston described as a “rant” at Wednesday’s Hillsborough Board of County Commission, Victor Crist isn’t finished getting the last word in when it comes to the county’s battle with Uber — the more recalcitrant of the two ridesharing companies that have been operating out of compliance with the Public Transportation Commission (PTC) for the past 18 months. “To date, the problem has been that Uber has refused to meet with the PTC…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.20.15 — The 1% solution for a Hillsborough County transportation tax

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The news that the Go Hillsborough campaign has reintroduced the prospect of the Hillsborough transportation tax going from a half-cent to a full penny apparently alienated a few county commissioners, who didn’t get a heads-up that County Administrator Mike Merrill was about to do that on Monday. So now that they’ve got that out of their system, I’m curious as to what will be the magic moment that convinces Merrill and consultant Parsons Brinckerhoff to tell the Policy Leadership Group that…

Hillsborough County to study what it would cost if PTC were to go away

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

(Update: Jeff Brandes & Uber respond). This past week St. Petersburg-based state Sen. Jeff Brandes said that he intends to once again introduce legislation in next year’s Regular Session to reform the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission. Brandes, who chairs the Senate Transportation Committee, was reacting to the news that the PTC, which regulates commercial vehicle use in the county, would continue to have its officers cite Uber and Lyft drivers, even after a Hillsborough judge blocked efforts by the agency to ban ridesharing in Hillsborough.…

Despite court ruling, Hillsborough PTC agents will continue to cite Uber drivers

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Despite a court ruling that rejected their request that could have prevented Uber from operating in Hillsborough County, the Public Transportation Commission agreed today that they could continue to issue citations against Uber (and Lyft) drivers. “It is our opinion that there is nothing in Judge Huey’s order that prevents the PTC from continuing its enforcement actions against Uber,  should the commission decide to take that action,” PTC attorney Cindy Oster told the board. “Currently our director has been enforcing our rules and regs…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Hillsborough County Commission voted unanimously this afternoon to remove the Third National Flag of the Confederacy from the County Center in downtown Tampa today, along with the flags of the other countries that also hang in the lobby that used to occupy Florida: Spain, France, and Great Britain. The American flag also hangs in the lobby. The motion to do so came from County Commissioner Les Miller, the only black member of the board. After the unanimous vote to…

Parsons Brinckerhoff contributes $5,000 to Bob Buckhorn’s PAC

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Next Thursday, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn will sit along with his colleagues on the Hillsborough County Policy Leadership Group on whether or not to support the half-cent transportation tax proposal announced last month by County Administrator Mike Merrill and Parsons Brinckerhoff. Parsons Brinckerhoff is the national transportation consultant hired by the county last year for $900,000 to help facilitate the public outreach effort regarding transportation issues in the county. Although there has been criticism about the plan from a variety of…

New Hillsborough County EPC head Janet Dougherty agrees to give up political activities in new job

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Last Friday night, Janet Dougherty could be seen hobnobbing with various Republican Party friends at the Hillsborough County Lincoln Day Dinner at the Pepin Center in Tampa — the annual fundraiser for the local GOP that will help the party as it tries to win local, state and the presidential race in 2016. But it’s the type of event that she will no longer be able to attend as executive director of the county’s Environmental Protection Commission, after attorneys representing herself  and…
