in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The City of St. Pete is hosting a candidate forum Monday at 7 p.m. in City Council chambers. Candidates from Districts 1, 5 and 7 are all invited to participate. That includes the two most-watched candidates vying for the District 7 seat being vacated by incumbent Wengay Newton. Lisa Wheeler-Brown and Will Newton, the incumbent’s brother. They are in a heated matchup to represent voters in the city’s poorest District. The League of Women Voters is moderating the debate. It’s…

Despite campaign controversy, Lisa Wheeler-Brown out-raises Will Newton in latest reports

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

If campaign finance reports are any indication, Lisa Wheeler-Brown supporters are unfazed by recent reports highlighting a series of campaign finance missteps that could violate Florida election laws. Reports filed Friday show Wheeler-Brown raised $11,700 between September 14 through October 4th. During that same time frame, Wheeler-Brown’s opponent, Will Newton, raised $9,415. Reports showing Wheeler-Brown used $500 in campaign funds for personal dental work, misreported that expense as office space for more than six months and failed to report in-kind…

Anti-Will Newton mailer attacks family ties

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In what has turned out to be the most creative campaign mail artwork so far, a pro-Lisa Wheeler-Brown flier goes negative by showing City Council member Wengay Newton and his brother Will Newton as bobblehead dolls. Will Newton is running against Wheeler-Brown to replace his brother in District 7. The mailer compares Will Newton to his brother and makes the argument that Newton 2.0 would be repeat of the current Newton who’s all about saying ‘No.’ “Moving our city forward…

Midtown nonprofit may have illegally given office space to Lisa Wheeler-Brown

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A St. Pete nonprofit that serves underprivileged youth and others in the Midtown community may be breaking an Internal Revenue Code and be at risk of IRS sanctions. Advantage Village Academy offered space free of charge to St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown to use periodically as office space for her campaign. Under any definition, that is considered an in-kind contribution. But there’s a problem. Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations are explicitly prohibited from contributing, in-kind or otherwise, to political campaigns.…

Tampa Bay Times remains silent about Lisa Wheeler-Brown campaign finance mishaps

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times did not cover revelations that St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown failed to report a $500 dental procedure paid for by campaign funds for more than six months. In doing so, four months’ worth of free office space from a local nonprofit haven’t been reported either. It’s a likely damning mark on Wheeler-Brown’s campaign, considering an elections law expert told SaintPetersblog the flurry of infractions is worthy of an election commission investigation and, in his…

District 7 candidates must broaden reach for citywide vote

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After the St. Pete Primary Election that moved candidates Lisa Wheeler-Brown and Will Newton on to the Nov. 3 primary, we took a look at Election Day data in District 7 to see what strategies the two candidates may find useful. The general election, however, will be citywide. That means there’s a whole swath of voters to attract in districts where the demographic is entirely different than the mostly impoverished district the candidates would represent if elected. Looking at numbers…
