Lisa Wheeler-Brown opponents launch inappropriate attack on her personal life

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A group called “Blue TampaBay” tagged me in a Facebook post this morning launching personal attacks against St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown. I was no doubt tagged because I have a forum in which to inform voters and a recently notable post breaking egregious campaign finance screw-ups within her campaign. It’s worth noting, I was not the only reporter tagged. Whoever posted this is trying to get their word out. The post called Wheeler-Brown’s name an alias and…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown fails to report in-kind contributions for office space

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown utilized office space in a nonprofit St. Pete facility to meet with campaign staff and supporters every Thursday for about four months but did not disclose this as an in-kind contribution on official campaign reports. This is a clear-cut violation of campaign finance laws, Stetson University’s Dr. Wayne T. Bailey, a political science professor at its Deland campus. According to state election law, candidates must report  “the total sums of all loans, in-kind contributions, and other receipts by or for such…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown used campaign funding for dental procedure; claimed payment for office that didn’t exist

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown used campaign funding to undergo dental work. An amended campaign treasurer’s report filed with the city clerk Friday shows an added $500 expense to the company Modern Day Smiles for a “photo shoot expense.” Modern Day Smiles is a dental practice that offers cosmetic procedures. Meagan Salisbury, Wheeler-Brown’s campaign consultant, verified that the money was used for a dental procedure. “Lisa cracked her tooth, and had a number of events and photo opportunities coming…

Will Newton raises double that of opponent Lisa Wheeler-Brown

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Numbers are in for the first round of fundraising during the District 7 City Council race between Will Newton and Lisa Wheeler-Brown and it doesn’t look good for Wheeler-Brown. Newton raked in more than $21,000 between August 17 and September 13. That’s nearly double the $10,813 Wheeler-Brown’s campaign brought in during the same period. The latest numbers also show that Newton, who has been campaigning for far less time than Wheeler-Brown, has surpassed her in total fundraising numbers with $47,670…

Will Newton nabs endorsement from former opponent Aaron Sharpe

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Will Newton has earned endorsements from all but one of his former opponents. Pasadena Bear Creek Neighborhood Association President Aaron Sharpe has thrown his weight behind Newton for the District 7 race. “During the Primary race for District 7 I had an opportunity to spend a good deal of time with both Lisa and Will. Both are good people I respect who I’m honored to call friends,” Sharpe said. “Over those summer months I had…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown leads latest City Council poll; undecided voters still a huge factor

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The St. Pete municipal election this November could be all about the undecided voters based on a new poll released Thursday by St. Pete Polls. According to a survey of 654 registered voters, even non-competitive races are polling at a high rate of uncertainty. In the race between six-year council member Steve Kornell and his challenger, Phillip Garrett, who has raised zero dollars and doesn’t appear to have campaigned at all for the seat, nearly half of those polled weren’t…

Despite lackluster opposition, Steve Kornell holds no punches for re-election bid

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council member Steve Kornell hosted more than 50 supporters for a campaign kickoff party Wednesday night at the Magnuson Hotel near the Skyway Bridge. Kornell is facing re-election against challenger Phillip Garrett November 3. Though Kornell is considered a shoo-in for re-election against the relatively no-name candidate, Kornell isn’t taking any chances. He’s raced more than $30,000 compared to Garrett, who hasn’t raised a cent. Kornell presented his priorities to supporters over snacks and drinks in the…
