in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Former Port Richey City Attorney James Mathieu has resigned as chair of the Republican Party of Pasco. In a brief email to supporters, Mathieu said the move was for personal reasons. “Thank all of you for this opportunity to serve,” he wrote. “Keep the faith and Republicans will prevail in 2016.  Thank you all.” Mathieu, president of Mathieu Mediations and the Athenian Academy, a charter school in New Port Richey, has been chair of the Pasco GOP since July 2013…

Florida Dems create new website blasting Ron DeSantis

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

That didn’t take long. Shortly after Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis announced he is an official candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in 2016, the Florida Democratic Party responded immediately with a website, RonDeSantis2016.com, that features a large picture of the 36-year-old representative with the words, “Ron DeSantis: For the Tea Party.” “The last Tea Party Congressman to run for U.S. Senate in Florida suffered a resounding defeat because of just how out of touch he was with the values of Florida’s…

in Top Headlines by

Alan Grayson‘s entry into the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate for 2016 can’t come soon enough for the Florida Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus. Just a few hours after the Democratic Senate Congressional Committee endorsed Jupiter U.S Rep. Patrick Murphy in his bid for the U.S. Senate next year, the Progressive Caucus weighed in, and it wasn’t to congratulate Murphy. “The idea that a senator from Montana and Wall Street Democrats know better than rank-and-file Florida Democrats is both patronizing and unsurprising,” says…

Florida’s GOP bench for Marco Rubio’s Senate seat just got one smaller as U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan took his name out of contention for 2016. A week ago I spoke with someone close to David Jolly about the fact that the Pinellas County congressman was going to take some time to consider a candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2016. There were and are a number of pros and cons, of course, for the still newbie Republican representative to contemplate in making such a momentous career decision. The biggest downside is the very real possibility that after yearning to serve in Washington for perhaps his entire…

Gauging by the traffic on SaintPetersBlog.com, FloridaPolitics.com, and ContextFlorida.com, as well as the open rates for our morning email, Sunburn, the past two weeks have been the busiest time in Sunshine State politics since last year’s election. Even the weekends have been hectic: Last Saturday saw Jeff Atwater announce that he was not running for the U.S. Senate, while Sunday was when Hillary Clinton surprised no one with her decision to run for president. With so much going on, it’s…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.16.15 — The $2 billion elephant in the Capitol

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For those of you out there less enamored by Florida’s reputation as the “Gunshine State,” there was some positive news out of Tallahassee Wednesday night. That proposal that would give school superintendents the ability to designate a school district employee or volunteer to carry a concealed weapon on a school campus was scheduled on the docket Wednesday in the Senate Education Committee. Committee Chairman John Legg, though, exercised his authority and said it wouldn’t come up again in his committee.…
