Clearwater Marine Aquarium moves forward with expansion plans

Much to the dismay of neighbors, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is moving forward with plans to expand its popular tourist attraction home to the famous Winter the Dolphin. Amid growing attendance and increasing parking issues, the Community Development Board approved a $45 million expansion plan this week. That includes a food court, coral reef exhibits, lab rooms, a theater, two four-story facilities to house animal life support systems, and a three-story parking garage that will hold more than 400 cars.…

Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos and City Council member Doreen Hock DiPolito will both serve second terms. The two were re-elected Friday unopposed after qualifying for their races closed. “The one thing that I do not like about elections is having to raise money,” Cretekos said. “I can refund in full all the contributions I received.” As of November 2, Cretekos had raised more than $47,000. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is planning to stay exactly where it is. A previous plan to move into a larger facility in downtown Clearwater was abandoned because it would have taken too long. Instead, CEO David Yates is planning to rebuild and expand the current facility located just off the Clearwater Causeway.
