Tallahassee’s Governors Club bans smoking in members’ lounge before 7 p.m.

Think there might be problems tonight in Ferguson, Missouri? Wait until some members of Tallahassee’s venerable Governors Club learn about this change:

Fellow Members:

Today, after much deliberation and input from the membership, your Board of Governors voted overwhelmingly to modify our Club’s smoking policy. Beginning January 1, 2015, no smoking will be allowed in the Lounge prior to 7 p.m.

After 7 p.m., members who enjoy smoking will be permitted to continue to do so in the Lounge. This decision for a “smoke-free happy hour” was made after much discussion by the Board and input from members via a Club-wide survey. More than 57% of respondents voted in favor of making a change, be it in the form of a “smoke-free happy hour,” providing a dedicated smoking area in the Club, or banning smoking completely on Club property. Today’s decision by the Board to limit smoking until after 7 p.m. is a sincere effort to try and find a middle-ground to respect the wishes of our membership as a whole.

The Board has struggled with this issue for many years. Sadly, the filtration system in the Lounge was never built properly, and numerous changes to try to ameliorate it over the years have been unsuccessful.

I would like to take a moment to address myself to our smoking patrons. We are not banning smoking altogether. We are currently working on making changes to our facilities to allow for dedicated smoking areas, and you will hear of those changes in the coming months.  Your feedback was very much taken to heart, and I hope today’s actions are reflective of that.

I would like to thank the members of the Board of Governors for their deliberation, and thank all of our Club members who took the time to provide us with the feedback that guided these actions. In the end, our goal is always to provide our membership with the greatest Club experience possible.

The Board of Governors joins me in wishing you all a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.

On behalf of the Board,

Gus Corbella
