Tampa City Councilwoman Yolie Capin to host re-election fundraiser tonight

in Uncategorized by

This afternoon, Yolie Capin will be hosting a major fundraiser for her re-election campaign for Tampa City Council District 3.

The event is at “Miromar,” the Ballast Point home of Tom Hall and Ken Jewett, 5215 South Nichol Street in Tampa – one block from the Tampa Yacht Club. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m.

Among those on the host committee are Hillsborough County Council Member Kevin Beckner, former Tampa City Council member Linda Saul-Sena, Columbia Restaurant Group president Richard Gonzmart, Tampa preservationist Del Acosta, Ambassador David A. Straz Jr. and former gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink.

Best known for proposing Tampa’s domestic partnership registry, which granted a number of protections to unmarried couples, Capin also led the push to declare the Cuban sandwich as Tampa’s official sandwich. The declaration became part of the rivalry between Tampa and Miami over which had the most authentic Cuban sandwich.

One somewhat unpopular proposal backed by Capin was Tampa’s launch of a public-private Employment-Based EB-5 Regional Center. EB-5 Immigrant Investor is a federal program directed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security. EB-5s stimulate the economy by way of job creation and foreign capital investment. Although passed by the City Council, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has been resistant to the idea.

RSVPs for the event – which has a suggested contribution of $100 to $1,000 — are available from Shirley Ann Vergara at yolie@yoliecapin.com. More information on Capin’s campaign is at www.yoliecapin.com.
