The arts are a big deal in St. Petersburg, greatly valued by locals and tourists alike. Unarguably, a significant player in the local arts scene is The Morean Arts Center, which includes Morean Galleries, Glass Studio and Hot Shop, Chihuly Collection, Center for Clay and various class/workshop and educational opportunities.

Yet, to keep the arts thriving, it’s important to find ways to leverage what resources you have and find ways to engage the community in all you have to offer. Morean is doing just that.

Through the leadership of Morean’s Interim Executive Director Wayne David Atherholt, the Morean Arts Center is re-launching its membership program. Atherholt says, “this time featuring all the great benefits you knew before PLUS unlimited admission to the Chihuly Collection and the Morean Glass Studio & Hot Shop.  There is no admission charged at the Morean Arts Center or the Morean Center for Clay and we’ve already lowered our class prices to what the member rate was.”

Standard Membership Benefits Include: 1) Receive complimentary admission to the Chihuly Collection and glass blowing demonstrations in the Morean Glass Studio & Hot Shop year-round; 2) Discounts of 10% off all Morean retail facilities including the Chihuly Collection Store, the Hot Shop Store and the Morean Gallery Store; 3) Discounts at the Morean’s partners including Davidson Fine Art, Central Arts Supply and Spice Routes Café; 4) Invitation to exclusive events for members only including private viewings, and receive advance registration for Summer Camp and art classes for members; 5) Artist members receive an invitation to participate in the annual Members Exhibition and the annual Holiday Show plus access to special artist networking events and forums; and, 6) Artist members are listed online in our professional artist directory.

Atherholt also encourages the public to take part in several other recent enhancements. “And if you haven’t been here recently, you won’t want to miss our Morean Gallery Store that was so popular and is back as well as the all-new Spice Routes Cafe.  There are opportunities for member artists to place items on consignment in the store and to enter the annual Members Show and Holiday Show.  We are still formulating special benefits for artist-members, so get involved and be heard.”

Memberships range from $1,000 for a Corporate Circle membership to a $55 individual membership and a $25 student membership along with several other member levels and corresponding benefits in between.

The Morean Arts Center is growing and thriving, opening its latest exhibit March 16 at 5:00 p.m. – “WAX: Medium Meets Message.” Local artist and activist Leslie Neumann has gathered nine artists who work in diverse methods but share the common bond of using encaustic, a wax-based paint with luminous qualities.

The public is invited to the Artist Talk at 5:00 p.m. followed by the opening celebration.

The exhibit includes floating installations, kinetic sculptures, photo-based paintings, seed-studded altars and geological sculptures. “WAX: Medium Meets Message” will run through May 28, 2012, and admission is free and open to the public.
