Three finalists selected in Pier design competition

A panel this morning knocked out six firms vying to design and build a replacement for The Pier – including the Tampa firm that designed the new Salvador Dali museum nearby.

Only three firms are in the running now. The city council is scheduled to hear a presentation on the three firms at a meeting Sept. 8.

HOK, the Tampa firm that designed the Dali, did not make the cut.

The three that did were: BIG, a Danish firm with more than 100 major projects to its credit; Michael Maltzan, a Los Angeles firm that has designed, among other things, museums and homes for the rich and famous; and West 8, a New York firm that has done waterfront overhauls in Toronto and Madrid.
