Universities pleaded with Gov. Rick Scott not to veto $137 million for construction and maintenance of classroom buildings in the budget, reports the News Service of Florida. ?s you review the budget that was presented to you by the Legislature, please know that the Board of Governors fully supports the PECO projects that were included in the (budget),?said Board of Governors Chair Ava Parker in a letter to Scott. ?ignificant investment in our public universities ?as well as attention to deferred maintenance issues ?is vital and creates thousands of new jobs.?Scott is combing the budget for savings, he said earlier this week, and universities and colleges are concerned he might choose to veto money needed for construction projects. Last year, Gov. Charlie Crist did veto some PECO projects for universities. PECO stands for Public Education Capital Outlay and it is a fund used for school construction at the K-12, college and university level. This year some of the projects vetoed by Crist made it back into the budget. Scott has until June 1 to sign the budget.
