A majority of University of South Florida Polytechnic faculty say they oppose the movement to make the university independent from the USF system, reports the News Service of Florida. According to a survey of 35 USF Polytechnic faculty represented by union group United Faculty of Florida, three-fourths said they did not support the separation of USF Polytechnic from the system. Local community leaders and the powerful Sen. J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, are pushing for USF Polytechnic in Polk County to become its own separate university. But other lawmakers, such as Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, say the university may not be financially positioned to spin-off into its own university.
