Wengay Newton sailed into the lead for fundraising during June in the race for House District 70.
Newton raised $5,280, bringing his overall total to $29,550. His nearest competitor Dan Fiorini raised $866, making a total of $13,367.95 The third Democrat in the primary, Christopher John “CJ” Czaia, a latecomer to the race, loaned himself $10,000 and raised $1,050.
Cori Fournier, the lone Republican in the race, raised $1,845. That is also the total amount he has in his campaign account.
Newton is a former St. Petersburg City Council member. Fiorini is the former House legislative aide to state Rep. Helen L. Spivey. Czaia is a St. Petersburg resident who has a law practice in Tampa.
Fournier is a real estate agent from Sarasota, according to documents filed with the state elections office.
The HD 70 seat is currently held by Darryl Rouson, who has termed out. The district includes parts of south Pinellas, Manatee, north Sarasota and south Hillsborough counties.
