What do New York, Mississippi, Florida, and Washington, DC have in common?

You don’t see New York sandwiched between Mississippi and Florida on a lot of state-by-state rankings, but the Tax Foundation’s analysis of where you see the fewest tax returns filed jointly has it that way.

The moral of the story seems to be that you have low marriage rates in the South and also in big cities (hence D.C.’s extreme outlier position), and thus the somewhat odd pairing.
