Citizens need to rally around “flackchecking political sleaze,” says Kathleen Hall Jamieson, a professor at the Annenberg School for Communication. That’s the name and mantra of a new project Jamieson promoted at the Personal Democracy Forum on Tuesday. It’s an effort, Jamieson said, to stamp out rampant deceptive political ads that news outlets should refuse to air. With the her website, flackcheck.org , Jamieson is aiming to ramp up the pressure on radio and television stations to fact check political ads and refuse to air deceptive segments. The site’s mission is to use “parody and humor to debunk false political advertising, poke fun at extreme language and hold the media accountable for their reporting on political campaigns.”
