I wrote earlier today about how today marks the unofficial beginning of the 2012 election cycle for many legislative and local candidates.
Candidates thinking about running have been waiting for the March 31 deadline to pass, so they could file without fear of having to post a truncated fundraising report. Candidates who had made up their mind to run after the first of the year have been waiting, waiting, waiting.
On Monday, or at least sometime this week, the waiting will end for many prospective candidates.
Two of the politicians I am paying close attention to are State Senator Mike Fasano and former State Representative Janet Long.
Word around the water cooler is that Senator Mike Fasano will announce a bid for the State House as early as tomorrow. If he does, Fasano will be running for the State House seat currently held by the term-limited John Legg.
Meanwhile, local Democrats are promising not one surprise candidate announcement, but two. Will one of these announcements include Long throwing her hat into the ring for a run for the County Commission (vs. Neil Brickfield)? If Long is going to take the plunge, there’s no better time than right now.
Of course, Fasano and/or Long could both pull out a surprise. Fasano could announce he’s running for Congress; Long could file to run for the State House.
