My wife’s closing argument for Charlie Crist

in Uncategorized by

Despite working on Charlie Crist’s campaign, my wife, Michelle Todd, has remained relatively quiet this election season about why she supports “Uncle Charlie.” On Facebook this morning, she explained not only why she is supporting Crist, but why others should too, specifically why it’s wrong to hold Crist’s changes in policy stances against him. Her closing argument is personal, but also thoughtful and concise. She probably does a better job outlining the case for Charlie Crist than any television commercial you’ll see — and without saying anything negative about Gov. Rick Scott.

Here is what Michelle wrote:

Election day is tomorrow, and the race for Florida Governor is tied according to most polls.

This race is too important for any Floridian to sit out.

I would respectfully ask that you vote for Charlie Crist for Governor.

Much has been made of his party switch from Republican to Democrat and some Democrats are leery of his intentions. I’ve known and worked for Charlie since his Republican campaign for Governor in 2006. The whole time I have worked for him, he has always stressed the importance of kindness first and of having a servant’s heart.

My own personal belief system evolved as a result of my time working in the Governor’s Office. I was a right-wing Republican. I once passionately argued for the overturn of Roe v. Wade (I’m embarrassed by that now), I believed that marriage was between a man and a woman (I now strongly advocate for marriage equality), I opposed Obamacare (and am now grateful for it), I voted for John McCain and not Obama but happily voted to re-elect Obama.

So many of my positions have evolved and it’s not because I want to run for some office or because it’s financially beneficial to me. It’s because working for Charlie Crist taught me to put kindness and basic human compassion first.

It was easy to oppose extending unemployment benefits when I didn’t meet with constituents every day who were truly trying to find work and needed the extension to continue putting food on the table for their children. Becoming a wife and mother changed me, just as becoming a husband changed Charlie. Don’t buy into Rick Scott’s campaign commercials – Charlie has always fought for Florida. He always will. Don’t punish him for his evolution on the issues; many of you have welcomed my evolution without question.

If you are on the fence about voting for Charlie and want to ask me some questions, please PM me. I will gladly talk to you or any of your friends.

I know in my heart that Charlie is right for the future of Florida. I hope you’ll cast your ballot for Charlie Crist for Governor tomorrow.
