Recently tapped to help steer Florida Democrats’ efforts to eat into Republicans’ majority in the House, Chris Mitchell will step down as Chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Party at the end of next Monday’s meeting, sources close to the HCDP tell SaintPetersBlog.
Last week Mitchell was named political director of House Victory by Representative Darryl Rouson, who is scheduled to take over as House Democratic leader following the November 2014 elections.
At the time of Mitchell’s appointment it was not clear whether Mitchell would continue to lead the county party, while working for the Florida Democratic Party.
Upon Mitchell’s resignation, Vice Chair Ella Coffee will serve as party chair on an interim basis. Party rules dictate that the election of a new chair must be set within 45 days of Mitchell’s stepping down.
In addition to presiding over this election, Coffee is tasked with planning the already-hyped Kennedy King Dinner in May which will be keynoted by former Governor Charlie Crist.
