WSJ: Let's stop pretending Charlie Crist isn't a Democrat

Harry Reid is trying to quell the latest maelstrom stirred up by Florida Governor Charlie Crist. The Republican-turned-independent, in comments to The Wall Street Journal, let a long-rumored cat out of the bag when he suggested Mr. Reid had spoken with him about caucusing with Democrats if Mr. Crist wins his bid for a Florida Senate seat.

His statements unleashed a furor among supporters of Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek, who demanded to know whether Mr. Reid was now backing Gov. Crist. Mr. Crist originally had been running as a Republican but dropped out of the GOP primary when he saw he couldn’t beat upstart Marco Rubio. Meanwhile, Mr. Reid contributed money to Mr. Meek and appeared at a fundraiser for him last October. But that was before Mr. Crist jumped ship. Asked Tuesday about footsie with the Republican apostate, Mr. Reid demurred, “You must be reading somebody’s mail other than mine. . . . I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
