Rick Scott’s administration ‘accidentally’ deleted emails; in other news dog eats homework

The e-mail accounts of Rick Scott and most of the governor-elect’s transition team were deleted soon after he took office, potentially erasing public records that state law requires be kept, writes Michael Bender in a bombshell story that dropped last night.

Scott’s team acknowledged for the first time this week that the private company providing e-mail service deleted the records as early as mid January.

We all know that the Scott administration, like the school child who blames the dog for eating their homework, is full of s**t.

It would be easier to understand and forgive the Scott administration for ‘accidentally’ deleting emails if it did not already possess a Nixonian regard for open government laws.

Actually, the parallel to Richard Nixon may not be that far off.  After all, wasn’t it the admission of an 18-minute gap on Nixon’s internal recording system that led to the eventual downfall of the former president? Could the deletion of a few email accounts be the undoing of the Scott administration?  Rick Scott is probably too insulated from the situation to be in real danger, but his special counsel Chris Kise may not be sleeping well.

Regardless, whatever goodwill the Governor fostered during his ‘Donut Tour’ is about to go out the window.

Another parallel to consider is the controversy which engulfed Johnnie Byrd’s speakership and bid for the US Senate.  Like Scott, Byrd ‘accidentally’ deleted emails which were public record under Florida law.

In all of these controversies, there is a common denominator: the actor at the center of the controversy already possessed a deep-seated hatred of openness and transparency.

That’s why it’s no surprise when the dog eats the homework.
