Clearwater native Melanie Margalis joined with three teammates to win their heat in the 4×200 freestyle relay on Wednesday afternoon. Allison Schmitt, Missy Franklin and Cierra Runge joined with Margalis to earn the top seed for the U.S. Schmitt swam a 1:55 first leg, while Franklin and Margalis each turned in times of 1:57. It isn’t an Olympic year, so fewer fans are paying attention. But Melanie Margalis is still cutting through the water. Margalis, the University of Georgia swimmer from Clearwater, posted the fourth-fastest time in the world this year at 2:10.26. Becoming the next Chief of the St. Petersburg Police Department does not appear to be in the cards for Melanie Bevan.
