House waiting on Senate before acting on Citizens clearinghouse

The House on Wednesday delayed a proposal to establish a clearinghouse that many expect would drive more than 200,000 policies from the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corp. into the private insurance industry.

House Speaker Will Weatherford said consideration of the bill (HB 7093) was postponed as the House waits for the Senate to act on a broader proposal (SB 1770) aimed at Citizens. “We’re literally just kind of waiting to get a better idea of what the Senate is up to before we start passing insurance,” Weatherford said. The Senate, after postponing its measure on Tuesday, is expected to take up the bill next week.
