Corrine Brown won’t be ordered to pay redistricting plaintiffs

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A federal judge has shut down a request from the winners of the congressional redistricting case for U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown to pay their attorney and expert witness bills of nearly $250,000. U.S. District Judge Mark Walker also denied a request to levy sanctions against Brown, saying her case “was meritless” but not “frivolous.” His order was entered late last month. Brown, a 23-year Democratic congresswoman from north Florida, lost her primary against challenger Al Lawson in the wake of her indictment on charges that she and her chief…

Judge rules in congressional redistricting challenge

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A Florida judge on Friday endorsed a map drawn by the League of Women Voters of Florida and Common Cause as the new boundary lines for the state’s 27 congressional districts. What it portends is a topsy-turvy time for Florida’s politics, with some members of Congress virtually ensured an exit from office next election. Graham is doing the right thing by waiting until the court makes it official. Barring something totally unforeseen, a good chunk of her Democratic support in Tallahassee, Leon County and all of…

Diane Roberts skewers ruling class during Tallahassee talk

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Writer, international scholar, FSU English professor, opinion columnist and environmentalist Diane Roberts entertained a crowd of North Florida Democrats Tuesday evening with her incisive wit and pointed observations about the state of Florida and its leaders. Referring to herself as “that professor conservatives warn you about,” Roberts let fly a quiverful of bon mots as she skewered the Legislature, “they argue like kindergartners”; Rick Scott, “Could you screw up any worse? Oh yeah, the governor”; and global warming deniers, “If…

in Statewide by

Received this e-mail from Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite: It appears today is D-day for health care in Washington. Speaker Pelosi and her Democrat Leadership team continue to send mixed signals on their vote count, so it is not yet clear what the final tally will be. One group who has made their vote very clear is the American people. Thousands of Americans have descended upon our Nation’s Capitol to voice their firm opposition to ObamaCare. While some Members have their doors…
