Irma not stopping Saturday’s Gators vs. Vols rivalry game

With the welcome news that I-75 north of Gainesville will not close due to the flooding of the Santa Fe River, returning evacuees will now have a clearer path home. Traveling Tennessee Volunteer fans and some Florida Gator fans will also have an easier time getting to The Swamp for Saturday’s game between the two rivals. With U.S. Highways 41 and 27 still closed, a nightmarish detour was averted.

Gators cancel home opener with Northern Colorado

Quinn Nordin became the first Michigan kicker to make two 50-yard field goals in the same game, one of them in a quick go-ahead spurt after halftime, and the 11th-ranked Wolverines won 33-17 Saturday to hand 17th-ranked Florida its first season-opening loss in nearly three decades. The Gators had won 27 consecutive season openers, the nation’s longest such streak, since a home loss to Mississippi in 1989.

Gators suspend another player for Saturday’s game vs. Michigan

The Florida Gators’ travel squad to Arlington, Tex. for Saturday’s opener against Michigan became one player lighter on Monday. Coach Jim McElwain announced that receiver James Robinson won’t play on Saturday after being cited last week for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. When asked if Robinson might be available, McElwain emphatically said “of course not.”

Florida suspends Callaway, 6 others for opener vs Michigan

Florida has suspended troubled receiver Antonio Callaway and six other players for the team’s season opener against Michigan. Defensive end Keivonnis Davis, defensive lineman Richerd Desir-Jones, linebacker James Houston, linebacker Ventrell Miller, defensive lineman Jordan Smith and offensive tackle Kadeem Telfort also won’t play Sept. 2 against the Wolverines in Arlington, Texas.

Florida Gators face tough challenge of rebuilding stout defense

When coach Jim McElwain took over at Florida, he inherited one of the Southeastern Conference’s stingiest defenses. The unit got even better during McElwain’s first two seasons in Gainesville. The Gators finished eighth in yards allowed in 2015 and fifth last year, no question the main reason they played for back-to-back conference championships.
