In Tampa, gun control advocates protest controversial NRA ad

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

An advertisement for the National Rifle Association that features a spokeswoman calling on the group’s supporters to strike back against protests by the left “with the clenched fist of truth” was the driving motivation for gun-control advocates to protest in downtown Tampa Sunday morning. Approximately 85 people assembled for the rally organized by Moms Demand Action. Activists met at Curtis Hixon Park at 11 a.m., and then marched to the federal courthouse to speak up for what they call sensible gun…

Joe Henderson: After GOP gives NRA another ‘gun rights’ victory, what’s next?

in 2017/Statewide by

This was a pretty famous case. You might remember it. On Nov. 23, 2012, Michael David Dunn was at a gas station in Jacksonville when he got into an argument with 17-year-old Jordan Davis, who was there with some friends. It seems the music coming from Davis’ car was too way loud for Dunn’s taste. There was an argument, which ended with Dunn going back to his car to retrieve a loaded handgun. He had a concealed-weapons permit for the…

On eve of Pulse massacre anniversary, Gwen Graham pushes gun safety plan

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

One doesn’t have to go back much farther than a few days to find the latest historical example of mass shootings in Florida: an Orlando workplace shooting that took multiple casualties. It wasn’t the first mass shooting in Florida. It likely won’t be the last. As Orlando and the state of Florida deal with that shooting, the first anniversary of the massacre at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub — a terrorist attack on the local LGBT community — also looms. In that…

The Obama administration had sought to strengthen the federal background check system with a rule requiring the Social Security Administration to send in the names of beneficiaries with mental impairments who also need a third-party to manage their benefits. With a Republican ally in the White House, the GOP is moving aggressively on…

Joe Henderson: Despite opposition, ‘campus carry’ returns

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Remember that measure some Republicans in the Legislature have tried to pass the last couple of years to allow guns on college campuses? You know, the bill the House passed last year before it died in the Senate (thank goodness). Well, it’s back. Of course, it’s back. It never really left, and it won’t leave until the National Rifle Association finally rams this thing into law. Never mind that a survey last year by the University of South Florida showed…

Despite vow to ‘take on’ gun lobby, Gary Farmer earns an A+ rating from NRA. How?

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Many tidbits come across my desk, but this one jumped off my screen: Gary Farmer was just “awarded” an A+ rating by … wait for it … the National Rifle Association. If that doesn’t shock you, allow me to explain. During a very heated Democratic primary battle versus Jim Waldman in Senate District 34, the NRA’s scorecards became a yuuuge issue in the race. First, Farmer accused Waldman of earning an “A” rating. Waldman then fired back, calling it a lie…

NRA targets Patrick Murphy in new ad

in 2017 by

Patrick Murphy is being attacked for defending Hillary Clinton’s role in Benghazi in a new television ad now airing in Jacksonville, Panama City, and Pensacola. The ad features Mark “Oz” Geist, a retired Marine involved in the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi that led to the deaths four Americans, including Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya. “Hillary Clinton’s State Department denied requests for more security,” Geist says in the ad. “Then she lied to protect herself.”…
