Rays trade pitcher Drew Smyly for Mallex Smith, prospects

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rays, still trying to escape from the AL East cellar, have added some speed to their roster. The Rays traded pitcher Drew Smiley for young outfielder Mallex  Smith and prospects Carlos Vargas and Ryan Yarbrough. Smith will fit into a suddenly crowded outfield, which also will feature free agent Colby Rasmus, signed two days ago. Smith stole 16 bases for the Atlanta Braves last year. He has 299 steals in the minor leagues. Smith, 23, would help…

For the Tampa Bay Rays, the streaks are all good these days. The team won its sixth game in seven outings Sunday. In five of the six games, they’ve scored at least eight runs. In all, they’ve outscored opponents 55-18 in those wins. Not only that, but they’ve now won two in a row against a first-place team. Rays beat Padres behind a pitching gem by Drew Smyly

The Tampa Bay Rays are finally getting the brand of pitching they thought they would get all along. For instance, consider Drew Smyly. The win, coupled with Minnesota’s loss to Houston, allowed the Rays to move back to next-to-last. Tampa Bay had one of its better nights. Starting pitcher Drew Smyly threw his fourth straight quality start for the win, giving…

Brad Miller’s 3-run home run lifts Rays past Kansas City

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Brad Miller found his new position Thursday afternoon. It’s called “crossing the plate.” Miller, whose shortstop position will be lost to newly acquired Matt Duffy, nonetheless continued his hot hitting. His three-run homer in the eighth inning pulled out a 3-2 victory for the Tampa Bay Rays over Kansas City. Miller now has four homers in his last six games, including a career-high 19 for the year. His home run came on a 1-1 pitch with Logan Forsythe (who had singled) and Kevin Kiermaier (who had walked). The Rays…

Rays keep their mini-winning streak alive as Drew Smyly beats Yankees

in Sports/Top Headlines by

If you do not think of the Tampa Bay Rays‘ overall record, then the latest streak by the team is a little bit of fun. On the other hand, perhaps that’s just how bad this season has gone. The Rays won their third straight game Saturday night, and came within one win of equaling their season high, with a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees. The Rays got their 10th straight quality start by a starting pitcher, tying for the…

Tigers beat up on on Tampa Bay, bullpen once again in easy victory

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Things are going so badly for the Tampa Bay Rays’ bullpen these days that they turned to an infielder Friday night. The Rays, being bashed by the Detroit Tigers, let infielder Taylor Motter finished the game up. And at least Motter kept the baseball inside the park, as opposed to other Rays’ pitchers who gave up a pair of three-run homers to Victor Martinez. The Tigers, who scored eight runs in the ninth on Thursday night, scored 10 on 14…
