Wistful memories of Tampa Trib that no wrecking ball can change

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The final demolition of the venerable Tampa Tribune building has begun. Workers began taking down the grand old downtown structure on Parker Street along the Hillsborough River, with plans to replace it with an eight-story apartment building. Forgive, please, my momentary wistful pause. The Trib was my work home for nearly 42 years until the company was bought and immediately shuttered by our blood rival, the Tampa Bay Times. I was in that building on the day it opened, Oct.…

President Trump declines ESPN invite to fill out NCAA bracket on-air

in Sports/Top Headlines by

President Donald Trump won’t be filling out an NCAA Tournament bracket on ESPN this March, unlike his predecessor, Barack Obama. ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz says the network expressed its “interest to the White House in continuing the presidential bracket. They have respectfully declined.” Obama, a basketball fan, would join the network on-camera and make his March Madness picks for both the men’s and women’s brackets. Last year, he nailed a number of upsets — most notably Hawaii knocking off fourth-seeded…

Israel fumbles goodwill visit of NFL players

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It was supposed to be a feel-good visit by a group of professional football players to give a boost to image-conscious Israel. But in an embarrassing fumble by the Israeli government, only five of 11 NFL players in the delegation showed up after being blitzed by Palestinian activists opposed to the visit. Israel’s ministry for strategic affairs and public diplomacy issued a press release after the Super Bowl boasting that the visit would bring “influencers” who would serve as “goodwill…

Blake Dowling: Drones, drones everywhere — Super Bowl to Prison

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Yay sports! Or “yay ball,” as one of my techie staff members used to say (she had zero interest in football, etc.) Yay sports, indeed. This weekend was awesome for sports, with the most thrilling Super Bowl ever. And I also attended the Kentucky-Florida basketball game; what a battle in the brand-new Gville arena. If you love hoops, watching 6 of the top 10 teams get knocked out Saturday was exciting; for Gator fans, a 20-point whipping of Kentucky (doesn’t…

Super Bowl game was simply the latest great finish in sports

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Don’t look now, but all of the sudden, sports are pretty good. Yeah, we all like to reminisce about the old days, about Michael Jordan and Joe Montana and Wayne Gretzky. Lately, however, we’re seeing sports as if they were scripted by movie writers. If nothing else, Sunday night’s Super Bowl should tell you that. There had never been an overtime game. There had never been such a comeback. There had never been a quarterback like Tom Brady, who guided…

Super Bowl generates mixed results for odds makers

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Las Vegas oddsmakers thought they might be headed for a big payday, but the New England Patriots — thanks to a successful two-point conversion that led to the first-ever Super Bowl overtime — left them with mixed results instead. Gamblers wagered a record $138.5 million at Nevada casinos on the big game, almost $6 million more than last year. The unaudited tallies released Monday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board showed sports books made a profit of more than $10.9…

Falcons’ flop a new low for Atlanta’s sad sporting history

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Well, Atlanta, there’s nothing left to say. The city once known as “Loserville” was cruising toward its first Super Bowl championship, leading Tom Brady and the mighty New England Patriots by 25 points. TWENTY-FIVE! Back in Atlanta, the city was all ready to bust loose in a celebration like no other, seemingly assured of finally putting to rest its history of sports flops. Then, it happened. The greatest flop of them all. This one will take a long, long time…
