The Tampa Bay Rowdies have signed Walter Restrepo for the remainder of the 2017 United Soccer League season, the club announced Thursday, pending league and federation approval.
Per club and league policy, further contract details were not disclosed.
Restrepo was released by the NASL’s New York Cosmos today to sign with the Rowdies. He scored two goals and had two assists in 13 games for the Cosmos this season.
Born in San Diego of Colombian descent, the 29-year old midfielder has played for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, San Antonio Scorpions and Cosmos in the NASL, totaling 16 goals and 20 assists in six seasons.
“I’m very excited to start a new chapter in my career,” said Restrepo. “I was aware that the Rowdies were interested in me and we were able to reach an agreement where Tampa Bay, the Cosmos and I all benefited. In my years playing against Tampa Bay, the fans have always been impressive so I can’t wait to play in front of them as a member of the Rowdies.”
In 2016, Restrepo signed with Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union, where he made four appearances.
In Tampa Bay, Restrepo will be reunited with Leo Fernandes, a teammate with the Cosmos and Philadelphia.
“Walter is a player we’ve known for a long time and he’s really exciting to watch,” Rowdies Head Coach Stuart Campbell said. “He’s got the killer instinct to take on defenders and go for goal, which will complement our current roster nicely. Along with his goal scoring abilities, Walter has also proved to be a threat when it comes down to creating chances for his teammates.”
Restrepo will wear the No. 8 jersey with the Rowdies and is available for selection, effective immediately.
The Rowdies return home this Saturday night when they open a three-game homestand against the Eastern Conference-leading Charleston Battery. Tampa Bay will then remain home to face the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Harrisburg City Islanders July 29 and Aug. 5, respectively.
