Dana Young, 51-year-old Tampa representative, just concluded her sixth session in Tallahassee, and hopes to return next year with a promotion into the state Senate.
With redistricting creating a brand-new state Senate seat that resembles her Hillsborough County House District 60 seat, the House Majority Leader has chosen to bypass re-election this fall and run in Senate District 18, becoming the first person from either party to do so.
A self-described “hard-core conservative Republican,” Young was no shoo-in when running for the HD 60 seat in 2010. But since vanquishing Democrat Stacey Frank in 2010, she’s coasted to re-election victories without the Hillsborough Democrats even nominating any competition.
Young placed seventh in last year’s survey.
