Pinellas commissioners on Tuesday unanimously granted waivers of some property taxes for ten years on five historic properties in St. Petersburg. Officials estimate the county is foregoing $49,301 in property taxes during the ten years on all properties. St. Petersburg, which also is waiving property taxes earmarked for the city, would be giving up about $62,343 in ad valorem taxes over the ten years. Lealman improvement plan moves forward

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Back in June, county commissioners made a historic decision: They created the first community redevelopment area in unincorporated Pinellas County. It was a move that, for years, was unthinkable with Pinellas officials saying they would never sanction a CRA in unincorporated Pinellas. CRAs were something cities did. That changed under a county administration and commission that’s become willing to try new things. In this case, the new thing – a county CRA – is the most recent effort to solve…

Transportation has been a major issue in Tampa Bay for 50 years, and there’s no solution in sight because of a governance model that has “paralyzed” officials, Pinellas County Commissioner Janet Long said Tuesday. Under the new plan, residents can pay a premium for spending up to six hours in a space. While they may pay more for longer on-street parking, residents registered with the Parkmobile mobile application will no longer…

22 pushups each day for 22 days raise awareness for #22Kill

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A dozen tiny ballet dancers are down on the floor at the Seminole Recreation Center doing pushups. It’s not just an exercise to build muscle or endurance for dance. The pushups are part of a larger project designed to call attention to a nationwide problem — the high rate of suicide among military veterans. A 2012 report by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs noted that, on average, 22 veterans kill themselves every day. “It was something we saw through…

Transit tax foe to Pinellas County commission: Reprimand or fire county administrator — or else

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Two anti-transit-tax activists fired off emails to Pinellas commissioners this week demanding that County Administrator Mark Woodard be disciplined for discussions he held with Mike Merrill, the Hillsborough county administrator. They were reacting to a report in the Tampa Bay Times that Woodard had met with Merrill to discuss, among other things, regional transportation issues. According to the May 3 article, the two had discussed simultaneously asking voters in both counties to approve a half-cent sales tax to pay for…
