Mike Twitty get’s official endorsement from Pam Dubov at campaign kick-off party

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Of the two candidates filed to run for Pinellas County Property Appraiser, only one kicked off his 2016 election campaign with a jam session: Mike Twitty. He also happens to be the lone candidate Pam Dubov, Pinellas’ current Property Appraiser, has chosen to endorse as her successor. “Mike is a business man,” said Dubov of Twitty at his Thursday night campaign kick-off party. “Mike has been responsible for running a business that has to make payroll, that has to live within…

Pinellas County cracking down on undeserved tax exemptions

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Finding funds lost to erroneous tax exemptions is a meticulous business, perhaps too meticulous for just two people. Currently, only a couple county employees with the Property Appraiser’s Office are responsible for identifying Pinellas’ undeserved personal property tax exemptions. A move made by County Commissioners last week, however, which allows property tax dollars to be used as funding for exemption audit services, will pave the way for an outside company — Tax Management Associates, Inc. (TMA) — to move in…

County funding to continue through 2018 for two of Pinellas’ biggest charities

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Neither Pinellas Hope, nor Boley Centers, Inc., two of the area’s largest charities, need worry about county funding for the foreseeable future. Last week, the Pinellas County Commission approved three years worth of funding for each organization. The Boley Centers deal is for no more than $317,480 per fiscal year, for 36 months, or until Sept. 30 of 2018. It comes with two additional 12-month renewal options, which, if picked-up, would continue to fund the private, not-for-profit organization through the…

Term-limited St. Petersburg City Councilmember Bill Dudley is ready to get back in touch with his roots. The former public school teacher of 38 years confirmed to SaintPetersBlog that he’ll be challenging incumbent Janet Clark for her District 1 Pinellas County School Board seat. “I was and still am an educator,” wrote Dudley in an e-mail. “Once an educator, always an educator.” Dudley has been serving as St. Petersburg’s District 3 City Council member since being elected in 2007. He was…

What Pinellas Commission’s redistricting letter to Legislature really means

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

On the surface, Pinellas County Commission’s recent letter to the Florida Legislature seems benign enough. Follow the rules, it says in more words. Fairly redraw the state’s Congressional districts. An appropriate piece of guidance, no doubt. The judge who gave the Senate and House until today to complete the task would surely agree. However, like a lot of political communication, much of the message’s true meaning lies beneath the surface. So, in the spirit of transparency, we’ve not only included the…

County Commission paves way for more well-paying jobs in Pinellas

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Pinellas County may be on its way to welcoming a wave of new higher-end jobs. At a Tuesday meeting, the Board of County Commissioners made all the necessary moves to encourage an interested businesses service firm — referred to as B5070737632 by the Commission — to house its new corporate headquarters in Pinellas County. Should the outside firm choose to set up shop here, which, according to the Commission’s Aug. 18 meeting agenda, it “wishes” to do, then an estimated 255…

County Attorney Jim Bennett earns another good review, although not better than last year’s

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Upon quick review, Pinellas County Attorney Jim Bennett‘s annual performance review was pretty good. In a numerical rating system where a total of 400 points were available, Bennett earned 352.3, or 88 percent of all possible points. Those numbers equate to a review that’s between “good” and “excellent,” according to the review’s rating criteria. There is, however, one noticeably hairy little fly in the ointment. Last year, Bennett scored a 93 percent. In the review, each of Pinellas’ seven county commissioners rated Bennett…
