Bartender’s lawsuit raises questions about cutting off drunk patrons

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A bartender who was stabbed repeatedly by a patron she refused to serve is now suing the bar where she worked at the time. Rebecca Schaefer was stabbed multiple times by James Klingbeil with a filet knife. Schaefer was hospitalized with serious, but not life-threatening wounds after the incident at Lana’s Red Lion in Indian Rocks Beach. Klingbeil was sentenced to 15 years in prison last year. But Schaefer is suing the bar because she says they did not do…

Florida Democrats come out against Marco Rubio ahead of presidential announcement

in Top Headlines by

The Florida Democratic Party is getting out ahead of Florida U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio’s expected Monday night presidential announcement. “As far as self-serving vanity projects go, Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign should win a prize. After failing to win a majority of the vote in 2010’s Tea Party wave, Rubio bailed on Floridians, and now embodies everything voters hate about Washington – partisan dysfunction and placing the needs of the wealthiest few above the middle class,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair Alison…

Blue Pier supporters produce their own song

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Supporters of the ill-fated Blue Pier design aren’t backing down. The group has produced a rap song set to an addicting electronic beat. “Six years old, story begins, concrete jungle I lived in,” the song starts off. The beat sounds like it could be used for a 1-800-ASK-GARY ditty. The lyrics play on a working-class, “a park for everyone” sort of mentality. They paint the city’s current trajectory, seemingly the Alma, as a destination for the masses, not the wealthy…

‘Game of Thrones’ insight from the Halfman

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Sunday is the big day, and we’re not talking about Hilary Clinton and Marco Rubio announcing their presidential bids -– that’s small stuff. Game of Thrones premiers the much-anticipated first episode of season 5 at 9 p.m. It means another season of vicious battling over a horribly uncomfortable and menacing chair, some awesome dragons and their bad-ass mom and probably a bunch of characters dying. But it also marks the return of the Halfman. The Imp. Tyrion Lannister. And face…

Here’s why Australia won’t be seeing ‘Game of Thrones’ first this season

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world, meaning more people illegally download it than any other. It even broke an all-time piracy record during season 4 when more than 250,000 people shared the same file at the same time. To combat that, HBO is ensuring the season 5 premier Sunday night on the East Coast of the United States at 9 p.m. is aired at the same time in 170 countries. That means while people here in…

Latest development in Pier saga may give City Council more power

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council has a whole lot more authority in the Pier selection process than originally thought – and certainly more than the Kriseman administration wants them to have. It turns out, City Council CAN hijack the selection process. But it’s a little complicated. Here’s the back story. In a letter to the Pier Selection Committee, City Council and the mayor last month, St. Pete resident and Pier activist Bill Ballard asserted City Council could reject whatever ranking is…

In alternate universe of St. Pete Mayor Bob Buckhorn, Pier would already be gone

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Imagine a world where Bob Buckhorn is the mayor of St. Pete, not Tampa. According to his version of that parallel universe, the Pier as it exists today would not be there. If that were the case, the rampant bickering among inverted-pyramid-loving activists and city leaders trying to figure out what in the bejesus to do about this longstanding dilemma wouldn’t really be a thing. Sure there’d be a bunch of pissed off activists complaining they didn’t have a say…
