in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Gulfport City Council hopeful April Thanos is threatening incumbent Dan Liedtke by outraising him more than three to one. Thanos raised a total of just over $6,000 so far in the race; Liedtke has brought in just $1,877. Both posted January fundraising totals this week. Thanos brought in more than half her total haul during that month, raising more than $3,000. Liedtke raised $975.97 with a $275 loan from himself. While Thanos grows a substantial fundraising gap, she continues to…

Looking at numbers, Gulfport mayoral race is anyone’s guess

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Taking a look at fundraising patterns is often a good indicator of a candidate’s eventual success, especially in local elections. On the other hand, the crystal ball in Gulfport’s mayoral race is a little foggy. Barbara Banno has grossly outraised incumbent Sam Henderson so far, but he appears to be catching up, and the two have about the same amount of cash on hand. Banno is doing a good job of raking in larger contributions, but Henderson is getting contributions…

It’s been a while since much has happened in the Pier debacle. The inverted pyramid has been gone for months and design teams and the city are working behind the scenes to finalize details on the new Pier. Mike Twitty expands already commanding fundraising lead over Jim Frishe

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Pinellas County Property Appraiser candidate Mike Twitty is the first countywide candidate this election cycle to raise more than $100,000. With $103,755 raked in through January, Twitty has also outraised his opponent by more than $60,000. Jim Frishe, a former state representative, should be benefiting from better name recognition than Twitty, a first-time political candidate. But the numbers don’t show that. In January alone, Twitty raised nearly $7,500 compared with Frishe’s $300. And Frishe has been in the race for…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council member Steve Kornell is calling the Rick Kriseman administration “tone deaf.” For that matter, he’s calling anyone who supports spending city money on a proposed bike share program “tone deaf.” In a Facebook post Wednesday morning, Kornell linked to a story published by the Tampa Bay Times online Tuesday about the failures of a bike share program in Seattle, Washington. “It is tone deaf to think a bike share program for short term trips downtown is…

The Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections office mailed more than 200,000 ballots Tuesday to domestic voters for the March 15 Presidential Preference Primary. The ballots were mailed to 93,415 Democrats, 98,618 Republicans and 13,973 independent or third party voters. A disproportionately small number of independent voters are receiving mail ballots because only Democrats and Republicans can…
