Hillsborough Commissioner Al Higginbotham wins GOP primary, will face Pat Kemp in November

Al Higginbotham crushed three opponents in the District 7 County Commission GOP primary race Tuesday. Higginbotham is currently the District 4 commissioner, but is term limited out of that seat. Instead he hopes to replace Mark Sharpe, who is also leaving due to term limits, in the countywide seat. With 222 of 347 precincts reporting, Higginbotham carried 66 percent of the vote. Dunedin Mayor Eggers edges out crowded field for GOP nom. in Pinellas Commission race

Dunedin Mayor Dave Eggers is winning against six other candidates in a crowded Republican primary for the District 6 County Commission race. With all precincts reporting, Eggers commanded the race with 30 percent of the vote. His next closest challengers are former State Rep. Peter Nehr and retired dentist Johnny Johnson with 22 percent and 21 percent respectively. Eggers could replace outgoing commissioner Susan Latvala who decided not to run for re-election. Pinellas voters give John Morroni another term

Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni will serve another four years despite opposition from another Republican, according to unofficial election results. With all precincts reporting, Morroni has a substantial lead over anti-rail activist Tom Rask in Tuesday’s primary election. Morroni leads Rask 66 – 34 percent. There will be at least one new face on the Pinellas County Commission. Former state Rep. Ed Hooper is up 64 to 36 percent over incumbent Norm Roche. Hooper will now face Democrat Pat Gerard in the November general election. Hooper ran against Roche because Roche voted against fluoridation in the county’s water. Hillsborough shatters early voting numbers; pales in comparison to Pinellas

Hillsborough County is breaking records this election. More people than ever are choosing to cast a vote before Election Day. As reported by the Tampa Bay Times, more than 80,000 vote by mail and early voting ballots have been counted where as in the 2010 primary there were fewer than 57,500.
