in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Everyone knows about the Presidential Preference Primary March 15, but not as many know there are a bunch of municipalities packing ballots with local candidates as well. All of the Belleairs – Belleair, Belleair Beach, Belleair Bluffs and Belleair Shore – will have one council member or commission seat on the ballot each. Clearwater will elect a Mayor and two City Council members. Same goes for Gulfport. Indian Rocks beach will have two commission seats on the ballot as well…

Ben Carson rap ad prompts parody highlighting racism

in 2017/Top Headlines by

A comedy writer for the Huffington Post put out a parody of Ben Carson’s rap ad, “Freedom.” The spoof is called “Panderdom” and makes fun of the racist nature in which the original ad targets African-American voters where they live in the highest concentrations. Most sane Americans thought the ad released last week to encourage voters in African-American saturated markets like Detroit, Atlanta and Memphis to support Ben Carson was laughable at best. It features a supposedly up and coming…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s victory highlights St. Pete’s progressive shift

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For the first time in St. Petersburg’s history three of the city’s eight council members will be women. And that represents a win for diversity in general. The current council, and the one that will still exist after inaugurations in January, also contains three openly gay councilmembers including the two women currently on council, Darden Rice and Amy Foster, and Steve…

No bids for Pier Park restaurant brings more Pier Park criticism

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A bidding process for a restaurant located in the Pier Park design yielded not a single interested party. Not a single restaurateur submitted a request for proposal by Thursday’s 1 p.m. deadline. The Tampa Bay Times reports the city is downplaying the lack of initial interest. “It’s early,” St. Pete director of development coordination Chris Ballestra told the Times. “This would go in a project that won’t open until 2018.” He said he wasn’t surprised the two planned spaces failed to draw interest right…

Janelle Irwin’s Fight for $15 Challenge: Day 4

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

My Fight for $15 challenge is almost done. Day 4 of the challenge is winding down and my day-to-day spending has been at or below by $17 a day budget. That of course is not counting the unexpected flat tire that required a $30 fix, extra gas from having to drive to and from Tampa to rescue my stranded beloved and a $100 expense for a medical appointment not covered by insurance. To keep within budget tonight, my family will…

Bigger, better Twin Brooks to re-open Friday

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

St. Pete’s Twin Brooks Golf Course is reopening Friday after being closed since May and it’s way better than it was before. The new course is bigger, nicer and more community resourceful. After undergoing a $1.5 million facelift, Twin Brooks shifted from an 18-hole par-3 to a nine-hole par-3. Even though there are half the holes, the ones now dotting the massive property have fancier mounds better simulating play on a regulation course, a giant putting green, manmade lake and…
