in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete is launching a six-month pilot program Friday that allows downtown partygoers or sightseers to park in one of two parking garages and then use a shuttle to get from place to place. The idea is to reduce parking congestion along St. Pete streets on weekends when visitors often have to park blocks away from their destination. The program is called Park Once and will run Friday and Saturday nights between 5 and 6 p.m. Users can park in…

Could Rick Kriseman’s City Council win really be a loss?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In SaintPetersBlog publisher Peter Schorsch’s rundown of winners and losers from the St. Pete City Council election this week, he counts Mayor Rick Krisemn among the winners. “With [Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s] victory, he has another ally on City Council and the fifth vote for his deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. The mayor also deserves credit for not appearing to put too heavy a thumb on the scale for his preferred candidate,” Schorsch wrote. Indeed, that is a win for the…

An inside look at Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s campaign challenges

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Victorious St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa-Wheeler-Brown’s campaign wasn’t exactly ideal. Negative attacks following the Primary Election clouded her intended message and dominated conversation in the media. And, as a result, her campaign management became too much of the conversation. “We work very hard to keep the consultants out of the story,” said Tom Alte, a consultant with the campaign. “You want the candidates to be able to get their message out and to talk to the voters and tell them what…

Architects working on the Pier Park concept are fine-tuning plans in preparation to present a final design to City Council and the public in January. In the first of several weekly videos highlighting members of the Pier Park design team, lead architect Rob Rogers of the New York firm Rogers Partners explains why…

Janelle Irwin’s Fight for 15 Challenge: Days 2 and 3

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Day Three of my Fight for 15 challenge is winding down, and I’ve already failed oh-so-miserably. But that’s OK – my failures only further the intended argument sweeping the nation. People just can’t live a functional life on minimum wage. For two and a half days, I have been absolutely fantastic at squandering money and scrimping on meals. Tuesday, even while running around (like a chicken with its head cut off, mind you) managing the Election Day madness, I didn’t spend a single dime…

St. Pete’s state of the economy reception message: We’re awesome

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Officials in St. Pete hosted a reception Tuesday to go over the state of the city’s economy. Basically, it was a commercial for the city, complete with a free drink for anyone in attendance. And the event wasn’t very well-scheduled, considering organizers nestled the reception in the middle of Election Day, ensuring most reporters were too busy to notice. In any case, the take-away was a good one. St. Pete, like, So. Totally. Rocks. First of all, the city is growing. St. Pete’s population…

Old Northeast, downtown voters favored Lisa Wheeler-Brown

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Lisa Wheeler-Brown, winner of Tuesday night’s City Council contest, rocked Historic Old Northeast in the election. According to data from the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, the precincts where Wheeler-Brown earned the most votes over her opponent, Will Newton, were in that general vicinity. She also crushed the vote in downtown. The Old Northeast Precinct No. 135, which butts up against Coffee Pot Bayou, cast more than 250 more votes for Wheeler-Brown than Newton. In the downtown Precinct No. 123, which…
