The Service Employees International Union Florida is backing St. Pete City Council chair Charlie Gerdes for re-election to West St. Pete’s District 1. “I respect him not only as a Council member but also as a human being, said local union chapter chair Brian “Cricket” Brehm. “When we are out there helping our homeless communities, we also see Mr. Gerdes doing all he can to serve them.” The union, which represents the SEIU’s public, healthcare and property services workers in…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown opponents launch inappropriate attack on her personal life

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A group called “Blue TampaBay” tagged me in a Facebook post this morning launching personal attacks against St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown. I was no doubt tagged because I have a forum in which to inform voters and a recently notable post breaking egregious campaign finance screw-ups within her campaign. It’s worth noting, I was not the only reporter tagged. Whoever posted this is trying to get their word out. The post called Wheeler-Brown’s name an alias and…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown fails to report in-kind contributions for office space

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown utilized office space in a nonprofit St. Pete facility to meet with campaign staff and supporters every Thursday for about four months but did not disclose this as an in-kind contribution on official campaign reports. This is a clear-cut violation of campaign finance laws, Stetson University’s Dr. Wayne T. Bailey, a political science professor at its Deland campus. According to state election law, candidates must report  “the total sums of all loans, in-kind contributions, and other receipts by or for such…

Pier Park opponents: Rick Kriseman = Rick Scott

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Opponents of St. Pete Mayor’s Rick Kriseman’s continued push to build Pier Park is continuing to annoy their lot. The Facebook page for the group Voteonthepier.com, backing a referendum effort that would require voter approval for any construction or demolition projects on city-owned waterfront property, is accusing Kriseman of being just like Florida Gov. Rick Scott. “Mayor Kriseman’s lack of transparency mirrors Governor Rick Scott,” the post read. “Mayor Kriseman’s also hired political cronies just like Governor Rick Scott. Mayor…

Traditional neighborhoods to get alley recycling pickup beginning in January

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman announced Monday in a video that, beginning in January, recycling will be picked up in alleys at homes where garbage is collected there. The move comes after a rocky rollout in which residents in neighborhoods where trash is collected in alleys argued it didn’t make sense to have recycling picked up at the curb. Those neighborhoods make up about 40 percent of the city’s homes and often have fenced-in front yards not conducive to rolling…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown used campaign funding for dental procedure; claimed payment for office that didn’t exist

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown used campaign funding to undergo dental work. An amended campaign treasurer’s report filed with the city clerk Friday shows an added $500 expense to the company Modern Day Smiles for a “photo shoot expense.” Modern Day Smiles is a dental practice that offers cosmetic procedures. Meagan Salisbury, Wheeler-Brown’s campaign consultant, verified that the money was used for a dental procedure. “Lisa cracked her tooth, and had a number of events and photo opportunities coming…
