Five lawsuits seek to halt TECO sale

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

So far five lawsuits have been filed against TECO seeking to halt the company’s planned merger with Canadian company Emera Inc. The lawsuits argue the $10.4 billion price tag is a ripoff for shareholders. The agreed-upon price tag includes $3.9 billion in debt and represents about $27.55 per share. That’s higher than the $21.07 closing stock price the day the acquisition was announced on September 4. Even still, TECO announced the sale highlighting a different stock share number — $18.39…

Ridiculous politics: ’80s pop band or Super PAC?

in Top Headlines by

Nothing highlights the ridiculousness of modern-day politics better than satire. A 2015 version of that means deciphering between some silly pop culture genre or theme and a political one. It’s this mentality that gave us the nuggets of awesome that were “Who said it, Donald Trump or Ron Burgundy” or a similar one picking out quotes from both the Donald and Lucille Bluthe from Arrested Development. Now, in order to highlight just how utterly stupid most Super PAC names are,…

Midtown nonprofit may have illegally given office space to Lisa Wheeler-Brown

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A St. Pete nonprofit that serves underprivileged youth and others in the Midtown community may be breaking an Internal Revenue Code and be at risk of IRS sanctions. Advantage Village Academy offered space free of charge to St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown to use periodically as office space for her campaign. Under any definition, that is considered an in-kind contribution. But there’s a problem. Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations are explicitly prohibited from contributing, in-kind or otherwise, to political campaigns.…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown campaign finance reporting amended — for third time this week

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For the third time in less than a week and the second time in one day, Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s campaign staff filed correction to previous treasurer’s reports. The latest round of updates include corrections to previous corrections that listed the wrong dates and numbers for some of the reporting periods. An amendment filed at City Hall to Wheeler-Brown’s growingly complex campaign finance file showed she had brought in $993 between April 1 and July 19. First, those dates actually combine two…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown campaign files trove of finance reporting amendments

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown corrected a flurry of campaign finance reporting mistakes Wednesday afternoon. Wheeler-Brown’s campaign manager, Meagan Salisbury, turned in a stack of amendments to every report submitted since the campaign launched in January until mid-August. The most notable change is the addition of several in-kind contributions from Advantage Village Academy. A previous amendment filed last week deleted a $500 payment to the non-profit organization for office space and replaced it with a $500 payment to…

Tampa Bay Times remains silent about Lisa Wheeler-Brown campaign finance mishaps

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times did not cover revelations that St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown failed to report a $500 dental procedure paid for by campaign funds for more than six months. In doing so, four months’ worth of free office space from a local nonprofit haven’t been reported either. It’s a likely damning mark on Wheeler-Brown’s campaign, considering an elections law expert told SaintPetersblog the flurry of infractions is worthy of an election commission investigation and, in his…

Pinellas legislative delegation split on PSTA partnership with Uber

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Members of Pinellas County’s legislative delegation heard a number of issues during a meeting Tuesday morning, but none was more heated a debate than a pilot program planned for the county’s transit agency. Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority CEO Brad Miller had just two minutes to list his legislative priorities this session. That includes a $1 million ask for final design funding for the proposed Central Avenue Bus Rapid Transit line that would create an express route from connecting downtown St.…
