September is World Alzheimer’s Awareness month, so this news could not have come at a better time.  Yesterday, the National Institutes of Health and National Institute on Aging fulfilled a promise that director Francis Collins, MD, PhD, made at the Alzheimer’s Association advocacy forum in April: a commitment of an additional $45 million in funds to advance research.  The University of Florida Health researchers have ensured that a sizeable portion of these dollars are directed to the Sunshine State with…

Revival of the political cartoon, Saint Petersblog style

in Uncategorized by

The editorial cartoon holds a cardinal spot in American political history, but is among the casualties in the rise of new, digital media.   No longer. Florida, meet Jason Payne, your new political cartoonist. Jason’s first illustration for Saint Petersblog and Context Florida portrayed the likely consequence of allowing Florida’s Prepaid Dental Health Program to sunset: a health plan capture of per-member per-month fees with little to ensure these dollars are spent on much needed kid’s dental services. On first downs, playbooks, and Common Core State Standards

in Uncategorized by

Someone I love dearly told me it is not that he’s against higher standards, but rather that he really, really hates violations of 10th Amendment. Well, he can rest more easily tonight knowing that the 10th Amendment isn’t under attack by Common Core State Standards, no matter the folks who cry fire in the political theater. During a Tuesday morning media roundtable, the Foundation for Florida’s Future charted the logic behind the state’s adoption of these streamlined, elevated standards. Common…

“Picture this,” writes Rebecca Grant in a column for The Hill blog. “You are flying combat air patrol near the South China Sea in the 2020s. Suddenly your GPS goes out. Your favorite datalink to other aircraft and ships floods with confusing signals. Your cockpit radar is a grey blur. The air operations center drops offline in a cyber attack.”  In this first-wave information attack, brought to you by cyberspace strikes, megawatt power jamming, fried satellite communications and disruption of…
