Bob Buckhorn PAC builds war chest

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

One Florida Political Action Committee, the political committee formed by friends of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, has now raised over $60,000 since being created in December. The PAC raised $43,875.15 in February, by far its most prolific month in its short infancy. Nearly a quarter of that amount, or $10,000, came via a contribution from LSI Management Co., also known as Laser Spine Institute on Rocky Point. $5,000 came from Alliant Partners, a Tampa architecture firm, and there were two $2,500 contributions: one…

in Top Headlines by

The conservative-leaning Florida House today voted to support an amendment to a bill that removes a ban on gay adoption from state law. The final vote was 68-50. The amendment is part of a larger bill that creates incentives for Floridians to adopt children in state care. The vote came despite a last hour pitch against it by a number of Christian conservatives like John Stemberger, who urged his members in a mass email to stop what he called the…

That meeting at the University Club last fall was a relatively sanguine affair until its conclusion, when a few business owners complained that there were still problems with their employees being harassed by some…

Like Hillary Clinton, Bill Nelson says he’d rather carry just one phone

in Top Headlines by

One of the biggest criticisms coming out of Hillary Clinton’s press conference on Tuesday was her admission that she opted to use a personal email account during her time as secretary of state because, “I thought it would be easier to carry just one device for my work and for my personal emails instead of two.” That comment led many observers to note that you can actually have two email accounts on one smartphone. But Bill Nelson understands where Clinton is coming…

Earlier this month, a group of Spanish-language journalists and community leaders sent a letter to the respective chairs of the Florida Republican and Democratic parties, calling on them to hire a bilingual spokesperson to “successfully relay your message to the Latino media.” “Our intent here is to convince you that Hispanic engagement is crucial, no matter the political persuasion,” wrote over 40 members of United Hispanics/Latinos of Florida. “Latino voters are the future of the American electorate. Mitch Perry Report for 3.11.15 — Film incentives bill takes first step in Tally

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Like it or not, Hollywood productions, like sports owners, have been able to play cities and states against each other for years to get the best deal for themselves. Folks in Tampa Bay are all too familiar with getting burned by giving welfare to rich folks. You don’t have to have lived in the area to know how searing the 1996 CIT was. That was the tax that went to fund schools, cultural amenities like Lowry Park Zoo and the…
