Bill Nelson refuses pick a side on Stand Your Ground

According to the Tampa Tribune‘s William March, U.S. Senator — and rumored Florida gubernatorial candidate — Bill Nelson will not take sides in the debate over Florida’s Stand Your Ground laws.

Nor will Nelson take sides on the U.S. Department of Justice’s involvement in the George Zimmerman ruling, which found him not guilty of second-degree murder in the killing of Trayvon martin.

Nelson did oppose calls for boycotts of Florida tourism and products.

“Why should all of the people of Florida be punished (by a boycott) when, in fact, there is not a question of the rule of law?” Nelson told the Tribune. “As the president said so eloquently the other day, the question is what about our relations among each other, among the races. … Does this not teach us something about how we should treat each other?”

Although Nelson has not been afraid to criticize Gov. Rick Scott in the past, when it comes to Stand Your Ground, he seems a bit more subtle. Nelson responded to questions on Scott’s handling of the debate by saying “I don’t know what he’s done.”
