Brightest minds in Florida politics: Brecht Heuchan

Ever wonder how candidates for political office know where to turn for contributions? Sure, there are the decades-old Excel sheets of people who have donated before. But that’s just the tip of a deep iceberg — an iceberg of campaign finance information that without expert culling has little use.

That’s where Brecht Heuchan comes in. Heuchan is the president of the Labrador Company and founder and leader of Contribution Link — a political data outfit that weeds through, analyzes and derives strategy from that overwhelming iceberg of information.

Contribution Link is the data consulting and analytic firm specializing in candidate fundraising. Using proprietary donor management software, including an iOS app, candidates are able to get the most up-to-date candidate and political committee, financial, legislative district demographic and performance statistics. Users can also connect through a social media link.

In the last election cycle, ContributionLink advocated for 40 candidates and political committees, helping to raise more than $6 million — providing a win rate of over 90 percent.

“Brecht’s brilliance is exceeded only by his capacity to respect his friends and adversaries in equal measure,” says Democratic strategist Steve Vancore.

Heuchan formerly raised money for the Republican Party of Florida and worked for three Senate Presidents, as well as House Speaker Dan Webster and House Majority Leader Jim King. He was appointed director of statewide campaigns for the RPOF in 1999 where he managed all campaign operations and oversaw a record $6 million budget. He orchestrated a statewide campaign plan that elected a Republican majority to the Florida Senate.

Today, Heuchan represents interests such as TECO Energy, Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Peoples Gas System, and the Orlando Magic. And as we enter the heat of election season, he’ll be there, too. Heuchan’s data talents are like the batarang … or lasso of truth … or Thor’s hammer, if you will, to strategic campaign finance.
