Now that he is USF’s quarterback coach, you can bet the Bulls will not have one play in their playbook.
You know, the one where the quarterback throws the ball to Bert Emanuel.
King, the former Bucs’ quarterback, has been named the quarterback coach at USF. Together with Darren Hiller, hired from Cincinnati to be the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator, head coach Willie Taggart has completed his staff.
King was 14-8 as a starter for the Bucs, taking over when Trent Dilfer was injured late in the 1999 season and quarterbacking the team to the NFC title game. In 2000, King was 10-6 as a starter and threw 18 touchdown passes.
King will work with Quinton Flowers and Asianii Woulard, a transfer from UCLA, as USF’s quarterbacks.
“I’m excited to welcome both Darren and Shaun to our staff and look forward to the energy and experience both will bring,” Taggart said. “We took some great strides forward offensively last season and broke several school records. We are not satisfied though, and I am always evaluating where we can get better and reach our full potential. We have a very talented and committed coaching staff and a new mix of energy, enthusiasm and experience to lead our players, and I look forward to seeing the results on the field.”
In his three seasons at Cincinnati (2013-15), the Bearcats put together the three best offensive seasons in school history, ranking 23rd, 27th and 6th in total offense and 18th, 13th and 6th in passing offense, respectively, in the NCAA. The Bearcats produced more than 5,900 yards of offense every season, passing for 3,900 yards or more and rushing for 2,000 yards or more every season, while averaging 6,370 yards a season. Hiller coached six all-conference players during that time, as Cincinnati competed in the Hawaii Bowl (2015), Military Bowl (2014) and Belk Bowl (2013) and won the 2014 conference championship.
“Shaun was a highly successful dual-threat quarterback in both college and the NFL and I think he will help take our passing game to the next level,’’ Taggart said in a statement. “I love Shaun’s energy, passion and understanding of the passing game. Our players will really respond to his coaching.’’
In college, King led Tulane to a 12-0 record as a senior.
