St. Petersburg should move its elections back to the Spring, but when exactly?

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The numbers do not lie: in March of 2001, more than 34% of voters turnout to choose the Mayor of St. Petersburg. 34% is not an especially impressive showing, but it’s certainly better than the 26% who turned-out earlier this month. And that was for a Mayoral Election. Consider the numbers when the Mayoral Race is not on the top of the ballot. In 2001, a paltry 12.77% took part in the city’s elections. By 2007, the number had fallen…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

In a speech to the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee on November 9, Republican Congressman Bill Young talked passionately about how he “will not forget” President Barack Obama telling “those who oppose (his) policies…to just shut up and go away.” Here is the video of Young’s speech: In case you can’t make it out, here’s what Congressman Young said: “During one of his visits to Virginia, at a loud, exciting rally put on by the Obama campaign organization, (Obama) made…

Images from Election 2009

Those running for elected office in St. Petersburg were subjected to attending a gauntlet of sparsely-attended candidate forums, such as this one in Midtown. Not counting the candidates and their entourages, fewer than two dozen residents bothered to attend the meeting — about the same number of people who attended most of these events. In the run-up to the 2009 Municipal Elections, the City Council’s decision to vacate the sidewalk outside of BayWalk became a national story after a fight broke…

SINN, the ‘bikini dance club’ next door to Scientology’s Life Improvement Center in downtown St. Pete, now offering free pole-dancing classes

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

With a homeless population that probably makes Mumbai seem hospitable, the last thing downtown St. Petersburg needed was a low-grade, white-trash bikini club opening across the street from Williams Park. But there is a certain irony in the fact that this club, with a stripper pole that’s not even attached to the ceiling and dancers that make the strippers in Pinellas Park look like Victoria’s Secret models, opened up next store to the Scientology Life Improvement Center. Still, by several…

10 things I think I think (for the last time) about St. Petersburg’s elections

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

1. I have to take umbrage with this line from Stephen Nohlgren’s (faulty) analysis of why Kornell won: “For starters, the Kornell camp worried about last-minute smears by Rouson or her supporters, Lapinski said.” Angela Rouson was never going to go negative against Steve Kornell because he was gay, simply because she doesn’t believe being gay is a negative. As for her supporters, of which I was probably her most vocal, we/I were never going to go negative against Steve…

Former City Council candidate Steve Corsetti considering party-switch to run against Pinellas Commish John Morroni

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Republican Steve Corsetti, who lost a competitive race for the St. Petersburg City Council, confirms that he is considering becoming a Democrat in order to challenge popular Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni. “Several people are urging me to make the switch,” said Corsetti, who lost by eleven points to incumbent Jim Kennedy. “And I am taking the idea under serious consideration.” Despite just running for office, Corsetti remains a bit of an enigma to many political observers. During the campaign,…
