Don’t forget about Kenneth City. They have elections, too!

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

A longtime follower of my blog (I didn’t know I still had any) read about my posts on Dunedin’s and Safety Harbor’s municipal elections and reminded me that little ol’ Kenneth City has a history of interesting elections and shouldn’t disappoint this spring because it has a decent slate of races up for grabs. I hadn’t posted anything about these races because this the venerable Anne Lindberg beat me to this story. Nevertheless, here’s the rundown straight from her story:…

A tidbit: Nancy Watkins is Deveron Gibbons’ treasurer

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I was reviewing some of the paperwork that’s been filed at the City Clerk’s office and one tidbit stands out, not that it’s a big deal or that it should come as surprise, but on Deveron Gibbons’ paperwork he lists Nancy Watkins as his campaign treasurer. To me this is another sign of strength for his campaign because Watkins is the authority in Tampa Bay when it comes to campaign finance matters.

How did I spend my birthday? Protesting for Israel, of course

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

A couple of years ago, I learned that one or more of my maternal grandmother’s ancestors were Jewish. I guess her family hid this fact out of anti-semitism or embarrassment or the false assumption that it would just be easier to ignore the truth. The rumor of my family’s history has yet to be fully confirmed, but since I found out about this story, I’ve been increasingly interested in the affairs of Israel. As a matter of fact, I was…

In Treasure Island, 3 candidates ‘elected’ without opposition

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

While the rest of the country may still be swept up in the excitement of last year’s presidential election, the residents of Treasure Island don’t seem so inspired. All three races that would have been decided in March were decided today at the end of candidate qualifying as incumbent Commissioner Phil Collins was re-elected without oppositon and Bob Minning was “elected” Mayor, while Carol Coward ran for Mr. Minning’s seat without opposition. As the staffer in the city clerk’s office…

Three commish seats up for grabs in Safety Harbor

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The otherwise quaint town of Safety Harbor can occasionally find itself home to rather loud city elections. For example, I managed Andy Steingold’s first campaign, an upset bid against Commissioner Deb White. The race was a bruising example of the local politics that can sometimes turn neighbor against neighbor depending on the campaign sign in their front yard. Safety Harbor is also a good example of the lesson that today’s city commissioner is tomorrow’s fill-in-the-blank, i.e., Pinellas County Commissioner Neil…

Wednesdays are for food and wine

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

If you look at the top right of this blog, you’ll see I’ve laid out a schedule of the features I intend to write about as this blog progresses. I want SaintPetersburg 2.0 to be about something more than Saint Petersburg elections or Florida politics so that when a reader comes here for analysis and insight, maybe they’ll read about another topic they find interesting — and our communal bond will grow all the more. One of my passions is…
